Rank Requirement Expectations

 Rank Requirements

Belts of advancement:

Mudansha
1. White   -    8thKyu
2. Yellow   -    7thKyu
3. Orange - 6th Kyu
4. Green   - 5th Kyu
5. Blue      - 4rd Kyu
6. Brown  -     3rd Kyu Sankyu   Brown Belt
                 - 2nd Kyu Nikyu     Brown Belt with 1 black stripes
                 - 1st Kyu Ikkyu       Brown Belt with 2 black stripes
7. Black (Yudansha grade Shodan Rank 1st degree and subsequent
degree ranking)
There are certain requirements that must be met prior to consideration for promotions. There are no one or two year Black belt wonders. All candidates will be required to serve "time in grade" (class hours of practice/training or individual practice with Rick Torres, Sensei, Chris Garcia, Sensei or otherqualified Mudansha/Yudansha student or instructor). Candidates must also have technical proficiency of the techniques required for the belt level that they are testing for. The instructor will determine when the student is ready for testing and will approach the student with ample time for preparation prior to the test.
All students must show proficiency in the following areas:
Attitude- Your attitude is crucial in any endeavor that you pursue in life. If you maintain a positive attitude it will help you to succeed and be more satisfied with your accomplishments. A negative attitude serves to only keep you imprisoned to excuses and to blame others for your lack of success. It is also contagious as a virus and can only infect in a negative manner those who are around you. Honor, integrity and respect are our tenets of belief. Help others to convert their liabilities into assets in order to help them succeed also. That way we all will share success. Respect and assist upper and lower level classmates when requested.
Follow directions, pay attention and refrain from talking when techniques
are being demonstrated by Sensei or other.
Attendance - If you are not there you cannot learn. Many classes, build on what was taught the week before . If you are absent, consult with the instructor prior to class so you can be brought up to speed. You can also ask for assistance by another classmate.
Techniques
    1. Kata (prearranged movements)- All students will be required to
leam a series of kata movements and must be able to demonstrate them with proficiency.
    2. Waza - All practitioners must be familiar with the concept of
waza. This is the actual application of kata. All waza are composed of three parts:

    1. Loosening up or distraction technique (punch, block, kick,
       distraction or nerve attack technique)
    2. Throw technique- primarily a Judo, Ju-jitsu or Aikido throw
    3. Submission-joint lock/manipulation, arm bar, leg locks, finger
locks or other forms of body pins, comealongs, pain
        compliance techniques, or finishing blows.
    3. Randori- all students will be expected to participate in randori (freestyle) giving and receiving of techniques in slow to moderate speed(beginner to intermediate level mudansha). This is an excellent learning tool to apply what you have learned. Randori should never be performed outside of the supervision of an instructor until the level of brown belt is achieved. Randori will be utilized to complement your Ju-Jitsu and Judo training. Kumite (sparring) will be utilized to develop your striking, counter striking, blocking and kicking skills.
    4. Weapons - All students will be exposed to weapons training beginning at the yellow belt level. If a student acts irresponsible during these training sessions they will not be allowed to train. Weapons are not toys and should be treated with the utmost respect, for your safety, as well as your training partner(s).
Weapons training in Aikijujitsu is based on the premise that the weapon is merely an extension of your body (hand, arm, etc.). The majority of the techniques taught will be defensive in nature, although some training will involve offensive techniques (Philipino Escrima Stick Fighting). Weapons of choice will be the Balisong Knife (Butterfly knife), regular knife(tanto), esgrima stick and the cane, but you will leam others such as the Bo and Jo, Yawara , sai, tonfa, etc..

It is the expectation of Torres Sensei that by the time you reach
Brown Belt level 2nd stripe (Ikkyu), you should already possess
  knowledge in the following areas:

  1. JUDO- at this level you should be proficient with the traditional (classical) Go Kyo of Kodokan Judo. This is the standard syllabus of Judo throwing techniques which include 40 throws (you will leam more) ( NageWaza = tachi waza -standing techniques/sutemi waza- sacrifice throws ). The syllabus also includes Shime Waza techniques (12 strangulation techniques ) and Kansetsu Waza techniques (10 joint techniques). You should also be proficient in Randori (freestyle) andKatame Waza also known as Newaza (grappling skills).
      2. Aikido - At this level you should be proficient with the basic techniques of Aikido as follows:

A. Shiho-nage   ("Four -directions throw" and variations )
B.  Ikkajo Osae ("1st. control" and variations )
C. Nikajo Osae ("2nd.control" and variations )
D. Sankajo Osae ("3rd. control" and variations )
E.  Yonkajo Osae ("4th. control" and variations )
F.  Sokumen-irimi-nage     (side approach body throw)
G. Shomen-irimi-nage     (front approach body throw)
H. Hiji-jime    (elbow locks)
I.   Tenchi-nage  (Heaven and earth throw)
J.  Kote Gaeshi  (outward wrist twist)

You will learn more, such as projection throws, concepts of open and closed circuit appplications, Ki development, etc.
    3. Ju-Jitsu- At this level you should have a high degree of proficiency in the art of Ju-Jitsu. You should possess the Skill level to be able to test to Brown Belt second stripe within the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu System. This is one step below the Black Belt, Shodan grade. Shodan testing will be performed through the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu Yudanshakai and Torres Sensei or Professor George Kirby.
Ju-Jitsu is composed of basically 40+ techniques. Variations of techniques is endless and is only limited by the practitioners creativity and skill level. This is what makes Ju-Jitsu the Art that it is. All candidates will be required to demonstrate proper Kata, Waza, Randori and weapons skills (defensive in nature).

Budoshin Ju-Jitsu System Ranking (optional)
Enrique "Rick" Torres is a Nidan (second Dan) in the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu system. He is a member in good standing of the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu Yudanshakai as well as a member of the American Ju-Jitsu Association. Promotion evaluations for Shodan and Nidan on Mr. Torres were performed by Professor George Kirby, who bestowed the Shodan and Nidan ranks to Mr. Torres. If the Student is diligent, as he or she progresses through the ranks they may also qualify for rank testing in the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu art system. Budoshin is the art taught and propagated by Professor George Kirby (10th Dan, Kudan, Hanshi) who is the current foremost practitioner of the system(system Grandmaster). This style is more classical in nature asopposed to the more eclectic approach of Kyu Shin Ryu. Professor Kirby is the direct student of Professor Jack Seki (now deceased) whose training occurred in Japan with such instructors as Jigoro Kano (Judo founder) and Master Seki (Ju-Jitsu Master who was also Prof. Seki's father). Ranking and testing requirements are different but your training in Kyu Shin Ryu should prepare you for the requirements needed as they correlate with techniques in the Budoshin system also. Remember, Kyu Shin Ryu evolution occurred from Ju-Jitsu also. That is why there is a strong emphasis on Ju-Jitsu for self defense techniques. Students desiring to secure these rankings should become membersof the Budoshin Yudanshakai as well as the American Ju-Jitsu Association. All students are encouraged to become members of the American Ju-Jitsu Association.
Membership in both these organizations is required at the Brown Belt Level.
There are two required Budoshin Ju-Jitsu texts for students:
   1. "Ju-Jitsu: Basic Techniques of the Gentle Art"
   2. "Ju-Jitsu: Intermediate Techniques of the Gentle Art"

Both these books are authored by Professor Kirby and can be secured through any major bookstore or bought directly from the Budoshin Yudanshakai. Website is WWW.BUDOSHIN.COM.. This website has detailed history of Budoshin, it's heritage, and biographies on the instructors. There is also a question and answer section(Kokoro) for those needing questions answered. This website also has some very interesting links to other martial art websites. Discuss Budoshin ranking with your Instructor. Handouts for requirements will be provided. A full series of video training tapes (white to black belt requirements) by Prof. Kirby is also available for order through the Budoshin Yudanshakai.

Green Belt Requirements
This level of training will begin a more in depth study of the
concepts of Aikido (developed by Morihei Ueshiba, also known as O-
Sensei) and its inception from Daito Ryu Aikijujitsu concepts. The
training at this level will have more emphasis on learning how to
transition from soft techniques to hard techniques and vice versa. We will
also apply the same learning principles to the study of Judo developed by
Prof. Jigoro Kano and how it developed from the art ofJujitsu. You will
begin to see, if you have not already, the many similarities present
between the techniques studied in the different styles. There may be subtle
changes in footwork or technique(hand/body position) application that
may change the technique from hard to soft or from soft to hard
contingent on the circumstance and level of intervention needed. We will
leam how to not confuse these concepts but to feel comfortable with the
interchange that takes place. At this level of training more emphasis will
also be placed on your grappling skills. There will be a greater emphasis
on flowing application of technique during Newaza ground play.
You should already be familiar with basic/intermediate kicking skills
and striking skills. More emphasis will be placed on precision striking
(pressure point Kyusho Jitsu techniques) sequences that involve
strikes and kicks which transition into throws, joint locks, submission
holds and pins. Your body and mind should start to work more in
harmony at this level. Letting your body do the thinking is emphasized at
this level and above (concept of Mushin). Some exercises at this level
will be worked on blindfolded in order to hone other sensory and
kinestetic input and responses to external stimulus.
Ju-Jitsu Randori will continue to play an essential and primary
element in your training. Remember that you can learn Ju-Jitsu
techniques but this does not mean that you know Ju-Jitsu. We will
continue to expand on our studies of the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu system and
application of the systems techniques. It is critical that you develop your
skills through the use of freestyle exercises under the supervision of the
    instructor or designated student.

NO RANDORI, KUMITE or KATAME-WAZA OF ANY TYPE WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE
DOJO UNLESS UNDER SUPERVISION. THIS IS FOR THE
PROTECTION OF ALL STUDENTS.

Belt candidates as part of their Jujitsu knowledge base
NO EXCEPTIONS

                Blue Belt Test Requirements
The rank of Blue Belt is considered to be the true transition belt that prepares you for your higher grade Mudansha ranks (Brown Belt Kyu's). This is the stage where the concept of Mushin becomes more tangible to you as a practitioner. Your ability to flow should become more obvious to you as well as the examiner. Balance and technique should display a higher degree of proficiency in the execution of techniques. Emphasis will be placed on Ki flow during execution or reception (Tori and Uke) of techniques whether in Kata, Waza, Randori, Newaza or Kumite execution. The paradox of relaxation and technique vs. power and strength, has he studied much more in depth. Focus during testing will he on students ability to flow between these two concepts but to rely more on relaxation and technique in order to get the job done with regard to execution.
During your training at this level you were expected to study more in depth the concepts of KyuSho Jitsu (pressure point fighting). Students will be expected to display anatomical meridians and activation and striking points on the body. We find that as we develop this knowledge it does away with excess in our striking techniques and creates a high level of efficiency. You must demonstrate focused disorientation strikes as well as knock out point sequences for self protection and defense. Students must display the strike, push and rub points on the arms and hands at this level.
Your Judo training continues with the addition of more throws from the Kodokan Go Kyo (syllabus). Students should have developed more pinning and strangulation techniques during Newaza practice. You have also studied the application of strangulation techniques incorporated into throws and sacrifice techniques (Tachi waza and Sutemi waza). Students must demonstrate transition from the Sutemi Waza (sacrifice throws) category into Katame Waza (Ne- Waza) techniques. You should be able to flow from a sacrifice throw into ground play strategies.
Jujitsu training revolved around the requirements for Purple belt in the Budoshin System. All students have been expected to learn applicable Kata and Waza techniques stated in the Budoshin student handbook. These requirements are mandatory for your promotion to the rank of Blue belt in Kyu Shin Ryu. You may also test for your Purple Belt rank in the Budoshin system at this level (strongly encouraged but not required).
Aikido training revolved around learning the Ikkajo (1'st control and variations) and Nikajo (2'nd control and variations). Much emphasis is placed on Ki flow, relaxation and execution of these techniques in proper manner. Understanding the relationship of Tori and Uke, with regard to giving and receiving the techniques will be critical during testing.
Weapons of choice at this level of training was the Bo (long staff) and the Jo (short staff). Students will be required to demonstrate striking and blocking techniques as well as defensive maneuvers, some of which will lead to submissions via joint or limb manipulation and/or pressure point applications. No formal Kata is required during testing. Waza application knowledge is mandatory (defenses against kicks, punches, and weapons) is required during testing. You may choose to demonstrate with either Jo or Bo.

The emphasis at this level remains in combining these strike into "Wave Attacks". A wave attack is defined as a series of no less than six strikes in sequence that involve the fist, open hand, elbows, fingers, etc., targeted at varied points on the body. This may be classified also as Te- Waza techniques if you or the attackers hands are involved. Wave attacks (as stated previously) are used for a variety of purposes such as hitting vital points (tsubo points), disrupting kuzushi points, distraction as preparation for a follow up technique such as a throw, joint lock/manipulation, or as a means to disable the attacker with crushing blows (power strikes).

in Kyu Shin Ryu. If you choose to test only for Budoshin Mudansha rank you will be awarded the rank of Purple Belt under the Budoshin System, upon completion of the Ju-Jitsu requirements only.
NOTE: All students must wear the Belt rank awarded in the Kyu Shin Ryu System while in the Dojo. Budoshin rank will be displayed as a colored stripe under the Budoshin patch on the Gi top.
When out of the Dojo, the student may choose to wear the belt of rank from either system (or others) which they have earned

BROWN BELT REQUIREMENTS
Your diligent training has now taken you to a level where some
practitioners never arrive. A Brown Belt practitioner is considered the
highest level Mudansha grade in the Dojo. This is the phase where your
Shodan internship begins. The expectation placed on you at this level will
be very great. You are now one of the leading examples of the
embodiment of the Kyu Shin Ryu and Budoshin philosophies. Much
emphasis is placed on your character as well as your ability to execute
techniques with a high degree of proficiency. At this level you should be
able to execute all the techniques from White belt thru Blue belt on
demand and without hesitation. You should have an increased grasp of
the Japanese teminology and be able to execute without English
translation. Your testing will reflect this. You have now also joined the
ranks of possible future Kyu Shin Ryu and/or Budoshin Instructors.
There are 3 levels of Brown Belt:
Sankyu (no stripe), Nikyu (1 stripe) & Ikkyu (2 stripes). The Ikkyu

ranking is the most senior of Brown Belt ranking and is considered the

highest level Mudansha prior to promotion to Yudansha Grades (Shodan

and consequent Dan ranking). All Brown belts will be required to serve a

minimum of 10 to 12 months of time in grade internship prior to approval

for Shodan testing. Stripe testing will be done at 3-4 month intervals by

Lead Sensei as long as class attendance and performance is up to par. All

Brown Belt candidates are expected to display honorable behavior both in

and out of the Dojo, as this is reflective of our code. This level of training

will demand much more knowledge in the area of your Judo, Jujitsu and Aikido

skills. You should be able to flow between these style with ease and be able to

transition from soft to hard and from hard to soft in your technique execution,

as needed, or on demand. Brown belts in the Dojo will be expected to take on a

higher degreeof instructional responsibility with lower grade Mudansha. This

requires that all Brown belts be up to speed on all lower level techniques. Brown

belts will also provide feedback to Lead Sensei regarding other practitioner lower

level Mudansha promotions. There will also be an increase of individualized

instruction between the Brown Belt and the Lead Sensei (advanced techniques of Kyusho Jitsu,

newaza, randori, kumite and Kappo).

Brown Belt Required Techniques
Strikes
   - At this level, the large arsenal of strikes at your disposal should be
delivered with a continued degree of higher accuracy and control. The
emphasis at this level remains in combining these strike into "Wave
Attacks". Wave attacks (as stated previously) are used for a variety of
purposes such as hitting vital points (tsubo points), disrupting kuzushi
points, distraction as preparation for a follow up technique such as a
throw, joint lock/manipulation, or as a means to disable the attacker with
   crushing blows (power strikes).
You must be able to demonstrate wave attacks with no less than
TEN coordinated movements in sequence at this level. Eight strikes, two kicks and one
takedown are expected in the sequence.

You will continue in the application of the following strikes:
   - one inch power punch
   - one inch palm heel strike
   - three inch power punch
   - three inch palm heel strike
    - The above will be applied utilizing one hand independently
or in unison with the other hand simultaneously for double power
    strikes.

    You will now add:
   - Gingitzu pressure point (tsubo) rub and strikes (Kyusho Jitsu).

Kyusho Jitsu strikes to the torso (frontal and rear) and legs and feet will

be our primary focus at this level. Students must be able to identify a total

of at least ten points on the torso and legs and the effects of singular or

combined Tsubo strikes on these parts of the body. Must demostrate

proper imobilization and knock out sequencing. Other concepts of

activation and sequencing will be learned for Shodan.
Blocks
Students at this level should have proficiency with all the previous
blocks in the White through Orange belt requirements. Students must
demonstrate defensive proficiency in blocking skills by being able to
defend against a sequence of eight strikes (punches, kicks or both
combined). These defenses must be spontaneous and not pre arranged

(YOUR ATTACKER WILL NEVER TELL YOU HIS OR HER
STRIKING SEQUENCE).

You will continue to apply the concept of how a block is a strike when

applied in conjunction with Kyusho Jitsu principles. You will see

increased hidden meanings to many of the blocking applications you have

   learned.

Primary targets will be the torso, legs and feet.
Multiple Attackers
You will learn the principles of entwinement, interference, and
separation as it relates to multiple attackers (2, 3 or 4+). You will also learn
distraction and evasion strategies. Candidates should have a strong grasp
of these concepts prior to Shodan ranking

Kappo and Kyusho Jitsu Resuscitation:
Kappo is the art of resuscitation. This is not meant to be a healing art
unto itself, but as a means of providing assistance to someone who has
been injured during practice or other occurrence. Participants in Judo and
Jujitsu practice may be choked out by an overzelous or careless partner.
They may also be kicked or struck in the groin area by a partner
inadvertently, or as a result of an ill applied technique (Uchi Mata is a
common culprit). It is essential that resuscitation or aid be applied quickly
and effectively to avoid any permanent injury. Brown belt candidates
must be familiar with the four most commonly used Kappo methods.
Your Sensei will provide you with detailed explanation on how and when
      to apply these techniques.
1. Sasoi Katsu- Inductive method
2. Eri-Katsu- Lapel Method
3. So-Katsu- Composite Method
4. Kogan-Katsu- Testicle Method (not meant for resuscitation but as
treatment for a man whose testicles have been kicked into his
pelvis region.)
5. Must also be knowledgeable regarding ressucitacion in the art of
Kyusho Jitsu. Must demonstrate ability to restore Ki flow to the body
and body parts, identify and use wake up points, and understand time
limitations for resuscitation when knock out occurs in Uke.
